Articles Pertaining to Biology

Yaqiong, T., Bo, Z., Liu, X., Bisong, Y., Dong, Y., & Fangdong, Z. (2010). Interferon-ϒ of the

Giant Panda ( Ailuropoda melanoleuca): Complementary DNA Cloning, Expression, and

Phylogenetic Analysis. DNA & Cell Biology, 29(1), 41-45. doi:10.1089/dna.2009.0909.

The article is exemplary as it explains how important performing experiments are to discover new
information about a certain subject. Writing an experimental report is another important area in
biology that the article presents nicely, as well as formatting. The article is about the cloning
and sequence analysis of the gene Interferon-ϒ (IFN-ϒ) in giant pandas. Understanding how genes
and DNA function within any living organism is really necessary when biology is the discipline of
your choice; it’s the basis of life. Thus, when wanting certain questions answered about a specific
area, one way of getting that answer across is through experimentation and lab reports. However,
the way that the report is written can be difficult to read at times. Meaning that most of these
kinds of articles are only directed to other scientists, rather than to the public. Tons of
scientific words are used, which not everyone would be familiar with if they are not in that
discipline, and it’s very ‘straight to the point’. Plus, in-text citations are really common in
scientific reports. Furthermore, experimental reports aid in future experiments by referring back
to old reports, in that specific area.

Wong, F. (2009, September). The ‘Gerstmann's Syndrome’ of transjugular intrahepatic

portosystemic shunt: should it be the left or should it be the right. Liver International, pp.

1129-1131. doi:10.1111/j.1478-3231.2009.02094.x.

The article is an ideal example of its value to biology, because it allows not only scientists in
the specific area to read it, but also permits the public to read it too. Compared to the article
above, the formatting of this article is not as formal; rather, it is formatted more like a newspaper.
Nonetheless, the vocabulary in the article is of medical terms, which not many people know so well.
Although the author does explain it well enough so that people who are uneducated in that specific
field can get the gist of it. The basis of the article is about the insertion of transjugular
intrahepatic portal systemic stent (TIPS) to help with cirrhosis and portal hypertension caused by
chronic liver disease. It is an important article as it represents the best way to get a medical
point across to non-medical readers. Medical reviews are discussed and read to further help our
population to know what is happening in the medical field, and to make our society aware of health
issues in their present day lives.

Stein, R. (2010). Human Activities & the Emergence of Pathogens. American Biology Teacher,

72(8), 475-476. doi:10.1525/abt.2010.72.8.2.

This article provides explanations of how humans have attracted pathogens, such as HIV and Swine flu,
over the past years. Everyday, viruses and bacteria are affecting someone’s life. Sometimes it can
be the common cold, while in some cases, it can be a deadly disease. Whatever it may be, pathogens
have been recorded in our lives for about half a century. For humans to be safe, microbiologists
have examined the bugs, and created vaccines for us to keep us relatively protected. The article
is a perfect way to get important information across to the public, as it is concise, and well
understood. Having the format set up like a newspaper article makes it easier for everyone to read
as well.
