Students Create National Website for Election 2000
A class of new
Political Science students of Acadia University has created an election
website for national consumption. They've designed a site for
Canadian voters with a focus on women's issues. The website, entitled
CanWIN e-2000 (Canadian Women's
Information Network Election 2000) provides current information on
issues of concern to women regarding the upcoming November 27th federal
election. Importantly, Canadian voters are invited to join in an online
national discussion regarding women's issues.
The site has
the potential to inform and engage Canadian voters in an unprecedented
way.
Furthermore, Canadian
youth have historically not been deeply engaged in electoral politics.
The Acadia students'
site may alleviate this gap with its
call to university
students across the country to get online to debate the issues.
Women's issues
in federal elections have historically been given short shrift. This
lack of attention to their interests and concerns persists.
It is therefore of paramount importance that women's issues
are addressed and debated by Canadians and the candidates. Taxation,
healthcare, childcare, education, violence, employment, and diversity
are some of the issues that we are currently following closely throughout
the Canadian federal election campaign.
The CanWin e-2000
website provides statistics on women and policy issues, daily quotations
and a chosen cartoon of the day. Students offer their interviews about
women's issues with persons on the street and with political candidates
via email. The CanWIN e-2000 website offers links to other helpful
websites, questions for political candidates, party positions,
local and national media coverage,
as well as an
opportunity for online discussion.
It is with great
earnestness that we, as students of the Political Science department
at Acadia University, offer this website to all Canadians in
an effort to contribute to debate and informedness
about women's
issues in Canada. We hope that this website will be a valuable resource
to the voters of Canada. Please use this new location to learn more
about the issues and become a more informed voter.
