Three main treatments of children's drawings
by psychologists

1) Use children's drawings as a way of finding out about some other process that the investigator is interested in drawing as a window on the child's:
i) Personality
ii) Emotion/affective life
iii) Intelligence

2) Create in depth descriptions of what to expect of children at different ages, partly in the spirit of Piagetian stage models and partly to help educators build art curricula for children.

3) There has been a recent surge of interest in psychology in the study of children's drawings as an important symbol system in its own right (e.g., Howard Gardner).
