Music 2273 Worksheet no. 9
RISM

Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (International Inventory of Musical Sources / Internationales Quellenlexikon der Musik), usually referred to as RISM, is a series of indexes that list Primary Sources of music (manuscript and printed) and writings about music. The published indexes are divided into two principal series. Series A lists individual sources indicated as containing the works of a single composer. Series A/I lists printed sources, 1500-1800. Series A/II lists manuscripts. Series B indexes various sources organized by common subjects or topics. A third series, Series C, contains volumes with directories of libraries referred to in Series A and B.

Acadia University Library does not have sufficient funds to own all the available volumes of RISM. Nonetheless, the Library has enough to be useful, and to allow students to become familiar with this important resource.

Portions of RISM are online [subscription only] at the RISM main site [in German].

[For a more detailed description of RISM and a history of the project, see Rita Benton, "Répertoire International des Sources Musicales," www.grovemusic.com (New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, 2nd edition on the web).]
[Note: This is a subscription source, so can be accessed only when logged into a University computer account.]

Part II

Part I, Series A/I (Vol. I-IX): Printed sources listed by composer (alphabetical).

Each student in the class will be assigned the name of a composer. To keep this part of the worksheet interesting, each student will be assigned a different name. To ensure this, each student will search in RISM for the name of a composer that begins with the same one, two, or three letters as the first one, two, or three letters of the student's First name. If this is not successful, select for the second letter another useful letter of the alphabet. [For example, I would search for names that begin Go... . If this did not work, I would then search for a term beginning Gr... or Gu... (etc.).]

[For this, select the appropriate name in RISM. (A list of selections in the Worksheet, as provided in previous worksheets, is not needed here.)]

* Use the composer's last name (family name). Using this name, find one book in RISM Series A/I listed as containing music by only that composer.

* If the composer selected has more than one book listed, choose the state that in RISM is listed as being complete (all the part books) and is listed as being in the collection of at least one library in England.

States (in the context of early printed books): Often single editions of a book were printed or reprinted with slight variations, or later altered by the owners. These variations might include added or removed sheets, corrections, or other alterations. Sometimes the variations appear on the title page as revisions in the wording of the title, differences in the way the composer's name is given, changes in the listings of the place, printer, or publisher, or some other modification.
Different versions such as this of a single edition of a book are known as States.

[For more complete descriptions of states, see Philip Gaskell, A New Introduction to Bibliography (New York: Oxford University Press, 1972), p. 316, and Fredson Bowers, Principles of Bibliographical Description (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1949 [reprinted, Winchester: St Paul's Bibliographies, 1986]), pp. 41-77.]

Principal libraries that have each of these books are listed in abbreviated form after each entry. For books that were originally issued in part books, these abbreviated lists of libraries also indicate which individual part books each library owns. A list of the library abbreviations (sigla), organized by country, is provided at or near the beginning of each volume of RISM. (In RISM, these lists of library abbreviations are usually called "Bibliothekssigel" or "Sigles des bibliothèques".)
[A similar set of sigla is provided in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.]

* (You should know what the term part books means, and be aware of at least of one example of a publication issued in the form of part books.)

Complete each of the following.

  1. In the box below, give a short title for the book assigned, derived from the entry in RISM Series A/I.
[The box will scroll to make room for extra text.]

Part II, Series B/I (sixteenth & seventeenth centuries) & B/II (eighteenth century): Printed sources containing works by more than one composer, listed by date (B/I in chronological order; B/II in alphabetical order).

Part I

Each student in the class will be assigned the date of one book.
To keep this part of the worksheet interesting, each student will be assigned a different date.

To ensure this, each student will select a date in the seventeenth century for which the last two digits are the same two numbers as the day of the student's birth. For example, if you were born on January 23, use the date 1623.

If the year selected lists more than one book (most will), select the book that has the same number as your month of birth. For example, if you were born on August 18, you would select the eighth book listed under 1618. This may be indicated as 16188 (etc.). If there are not enough books listed in the year selected, then use the last book listed for that year.

As previously, if the book assigned exists in more than one state, chose one state that is complete (all the part books) and is listed as being in the collection of at least one library in England.

Using this date and book in RISM Series B/I or B/II, complete each of the following.

  1. In the box below, give a short title for the book assigned, derived from the entry in RISM Series B/I or B/II.
