COURSE OBJECTIVES

The primary goal of this section of Engl 1413 is to introduce students to the study of English-language literature from among its earliest texts to the latter half of the seventeenth century. “Study” in this use means reading closely and writing clearly such that you can think, speak, and write critically about a text. The secondary, albeit closely connected, goal of this section is to teach students strategies for writing better.

To achieve the first goal we will read extensively from The Norton Anthology of English Literature, and students will write about what they read in accordance with the instructions for specific assignments, provided below. To achieve the second goal, students will be graded on their written work in such a way that places more emphasis on where they are when they leave the course at the end of term than on where they are at any other point in the course.
