Debate on Global Warming and the Need of Green IT

 [UPDATED March 26, 2015]

On Tues, March 31, we will have a class wide debate on the resolution:

“Be it resolved that Global warming is occurring on planet Earth and human endeavour is a significant cause of this warming.”

The debate will proceed as discussed below.

The team in favour of this resolution (the for, affirmative team) has the following members:

The team opposed to this resolution (the against, negative team) has the following members:

Structure of the debate :

We will use a common version of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate format.  It starts with a statement of the resolution. The debater who agrees with the statement (the affirmative) begins the debate and it proceeds as follows:

1.       Affirmative position debater presents constructive debate points. (6 minutes)

2.       Negative position debater cross-examines affirmative points. (3 minutes)

3.       Negative position presents constructive debate points. (7 minutes)

4.       Affirmative position cross-examines negative points. (3 minutes)

*** Recess ***

5.       Affirmative position offers first rebuttal (4 minutes)

6.       Negative position offers first rebuttal and closing comments (6 minutes)

7.       Affirmative position offers second rebuttal and closing comments (3 minutes)

       *** Open Floor ***

This gives each team 16 minutes to present their points in an organized fashion.

A typical starter debate team format has six roles (participants) as shown below.  This is meant as a guideline.  You will have time to organize your teams at the beginning of the class prior to the debate.

·         Lead Debater/Constructor -- presents the main points/arguments for his or her team's stand on the topic of the debate.

·         Questioner/Cross-Examiner -- poses questions about the opposing team's arguments to its Question Responder.

·         Question Responder -- takes over the role of the Lead Debater/Constructor as he or she responds to questions posed by the opposing team's Questioner/Cross-Examiner.

·         Rebutter -- responds on behalf of his or her team to as many of the questions raised in the cross-examination as possible.

·         Summarizer -- closes the debate by summarizing the main points of his or her team's arguments, especially attempts by the opposition to shoot holes in their arguments.

++++

As per the email send out on March 12 (see below), there are four debate teams.

Consider the team numbers to be 1 through 4 as you descend down  the page

Team 1 [Xie et al.] (Affirmative) will debate Team 2 [Micheal et al.] (Negative) from 3:00-3:40

Team 3 [Li et al.]  (Affirmative) will debate Team 4 [Jenkins et al.]  (Negative) from 3:45-4:30

The debates will be tightly timed to allow us to complete this by 4:30pm.

*NOTE* Team 3 and 4 will not be allowed into the class room until the first debate has completed; I.e not before 3:40pm

There will be a couple of judges for each debate. They will score each of the 7 sections of the debate with a score from 1-5.

Your groups total score will be the summation of the 7 partial scores.

Please ensure your team members are prepared to do their part.

In an effort to be fair to everyone who has worked diligently on the debate …

If a team member has not contributed to the debate effort prior to the actual debate, please have all active team members sign a piece of paper

indicating the concern and drop it off to my office over the coming week.  I will approach the individual to discussion the situation.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
